1.     EDUCATE YOURSELF

Learn about industries that buy, sell and exploit human beings and the different forms of human trafficking (HT) including forced labour, sexual exploitation and domestic servitude. Stay informed, start google alerts for “Human Trafficking” and "Human Trafficking" and "Canada".  Check out the largest library of human trafficking resources compiled by Freedom Collaborative. Start now by taking this free online Human Trafficking course.

2.     PARTICIPATE

Become a human trafficking abolitionist. There has been a lot of political and social engagement around trafficking. See our Get Engaged page for more ideas and resources. Register for the upcoming ForgoFreedom online campaign.

3.     SHOP FREE

Make lifestyle choices that do not promote global inequality. Take the test and calculate your slavery footprint.  Buy Fair Trade products.  Seek out local markets and groups like Ten Thousand Villages that are committed to fair trade products. Look for Fair Trade products in your local grocery stores (often found in the nature or organics section).  Request Fair Trade products where they are not available.  If a deal seems too good to be true, train yourself to wonder whether the low price might be due to exploitation. Check out our ethically sourced clothing links on our resources page!

4.     BECOME AN ADVOCATE

Question the normalization of language, behaviour and conduct that condones the commodification of people.  Write letters to politicians and others in positions to effect change.

5.     EDUCATE OTHERS ABOUT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Discuss it widely. Encourage others to learn to spot the signs of human trafficking. See our Get Talking page for ideas.

6.     PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY AND HUMAN DIGNITY

Consider how you can do this in your daily life.  Support the education of women and girls, here and in developing countries.  Do not stigmatize prostituted people.

7.     HELP AND SUPPORT CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Vulnerable youth are often targets for traffickers.  Show children that healthy relationships and families do exist. Consider becoming a foster parent or participate in a big brother/big sister program. Are you a youth? Befriend and show kindness to fellow students who seem to be alone or struggling.

8.     VOLUNTEER

Connect with a local network or check out www.freedomcollaborative.org to find local organizations looking for volunteers in anti-human trafficking work.

9.      DONATE AND/OR FUNDRAISE

Help support organizations that are working to raise awareness about human trafficking and offer support to people who have been trafficked.  Get started by registering for Forgo Freedom. For more information about how our donations are used see our Operating Costs page. Consider organizing an event yourself! This can be a great way to raise awareness. See our Fundraising Guidelines for more information. Get fundraising ideas!
